John Williams House

John M. Williams was a prominent farmer in the early 19th century, owning a large tract of land on what is now the south side of Westerly Road heading towards Edwards Ferry (in fact, he sold the land to the government for them to construct the road from Poolesville to Edward’s Ferry in 1828!).

John built two homes for his two sons sometime around 1850. Both homes are made of Seneca Sandstone, and it’s thought that John actually purchased the excess stones from the Monocacy Aqueduct to build these houses (see prior post on where the stones came from in the first place!).

This home was built for Richard Walter Williams and probably his second wife, Mary Jane Dyson Williams. Richard died in 1890, leaving the home to one of his sons.
