Pearre Family Cemetery

The Pearre Family has been farming the Ag Reserve in the shadows of Sugarloaf Mountain since at least the mid-1700s. William Pearre married his wife Catherine in 1816 and lived in the Pearre Family farmhouse (I’ll post about this home in the future). William was a prosperous tobacco farmer, acquiring significant amounts of land and owning many slaves.

William and Catherine died 2 months apart in 1864 and were buried in the Pearre Family cemetery, which was just down the road from the farmhouse.

The farm property was sold out of the Pearre Family in 1902, but in 1940 the cemetery grounds were deeded back to the Pearre Family. George Pearre, a grandson of William and Catherine, left a provision in his will to fund upkeep of the cemetery after his death in 1948.
