My dream home. The home I used to drive past in high school and wonder what it might look like inside. The home I had a picture of hanging on my wall when I was deployed to Iraq.
Benoni Allnutt moved to this plot of land, referred to in land records as “Thomas’ Discovery Fortified,” in 1860 with his wife Sarah. From 1860 until 1870, they likely lived in another home on the property that was removed at some point in the 1800s. Benoni completed his Italianate style stone home in 1870. A successful farmer from a well-established family, Benoni spared no expenses in its construction.
A journalist passing through the area in the 1880s wrote that “Mr. Allnutt’s home is one of the finest in the county. It is not only a handsome architectural specimen, but embodies all the comforts and conveniences that improved skill and refined taste could suggest.” I’d argue that the writer’s assessment still holds true today.
Chances are good that you’ve visited this property. But it looked quite different until somewhat recently. All pictures here are from the 1980s and 1990s.
