I had the privledge to visit the Solomon Simpson Plantation house (also known at the W.T. Jones House) yesterday. The earliest part of the home dates back to 1783, with the larger portion of the house dating to around 1890.
Solomon Simpson built the original part of the home after moving to the area from Frederick with his wife, Dorcus, in the late 1700s (the country was 7 years old when he built the home!). I spent some time researching Solomon and it looks like he obtained the rank of Colonel and possibly had connections to Zadok Magruder, but I can’t figure out if he had any involvement in the Revolutionary War (he would have been around 40 yrs old when the war started).
The main part of the house was built by William T. Jones in 1890. There are records indicating that William enlisted with the Union Army in 1863 (which is interesting because most from the area fought for the Confederacy).
This is truly an incredible property. Marie and her husband Tom have done an amazing job restoring the place, preserving the original features of the home, and also incorporating new features in a way that blends perfectly with the historic nature of the property. Many thanks to them for letting me into their home and showing me around.
