The 1785 House

My favorite thing about the 1785 house is that it was built around 1830! Richard Poole built the home with a log kitchen to the rear of the home (which was torn down in 1960). Interestingly, the small portion of the home was initially built as a separate home but at some point connected on the interior to the larger portion.

Of particular note architecturally is the incredible fan window on the side of the structure and the very unique 2 sets of double four pain windows (haven’t seen those anywhere else).

So why is it called the 1785 house!? To be honest, I’m not sure anyone knows definitively. There is some speculation that the log kitchen structure might have been built in 1785, well before the brick structure.

Today the building is painted white, but from 1830 to 1961 it was red brick. The size and dimensions of the structure (and its somewhat ambiguous past) make it one of my favorite structures in Poolesville.
