The Evans House

In 1885, St. Peter’s Parish in Poolesville had this home built to serve as its rectory. It remained under the church’s ownership until sometime in the 1970s.

At the time of the home’s building, Rev. Henry Thomas was leading the congregation at St. Peter’s and likely moved into the new home with his new wife, Rosalie Poole (they were married on November 24, 1885 at St. Peter’s).

While digging around in the attic years ago, I came across an old piece of paper under a floorboard with the name “Rev. Walter P.” Upon further research, Walter P. Griggs was the Reverend at St. Peter’s from 1889 to 1911…likely indicating he was the 2nd inhabitant of this home.

In 1894, Walter married Sallie Cummins Gassaway in Poolesville. Two years later Sallie gave birth to a boy (Walter Gassaway Griggs), but she sadly passed away five days later on 15 October 1896. The young Walter would later grow up to follow in his father’s footsteps, also becoming a Reverend.
